Heldendiner 2013 with Lieke van Lexmond and Alain Clark

It was a true spring day on May 20, 2014, with a large rainbow in the background and full sunshine welcoming the first guests at Studio ‘Welgelegen’ in the idyllic Dutch landscape of Vreeland. Sjors van der Panne greeted the early arrivals with beautiful and swinging French chansons. Once inside, it was clear it would be an intimate affair. 200 people in a slightly too small yet very charming space, adorned with impeccable table settings by Famous Flavours, the evening’s caterer. Flowers were everywhere, alongside elegant candelabras, creating a cozy atmosphere. Almost everyone knew each other, directly or through mutual acquaintances. We sat a bit closer to our neighbors, which only added to the intimacy of the evening.
After everyone settled in and Lieke van Lexmond, the evening’s host, made the announcements, Niels Geusebroek performed his song ‘Aniek,’ written especially for Aniek in 2010, followed by ‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay, a song deeply meaningful for everyone who knew Aniek and central to her farewell.
It was a special evening with cherished people, united in the fight against brain tumors. Professor van der Zwan, dedicating his entire professional life to this form of cancer, shared his insights into the challenges and how research can make a difference. It became clear that each of us can contribute, and there is indeed progress in brain tumor research. Willemijn, a renowned musical star in the Netherlands and Germany, concluded with Edith Piaf’s song “Ne me quitte pas.” Despite the seriousness of the topic, it was remarkable to see people enjoying each other’s company and the exquisite food. There was an incredible atmosphere, as if we were all one team, channeling our energy to lighten and strengthen our resolve on this issue. We were united, knowing it could affect anyone. Many attendees didn’t personally know Aniek but had loved ones fighting or who had fought against this disease.
Under the guidance of Marcel Dijkhuizen and the perfect timing of his gavel, highly sought-after auction items were sold at their top prices, totaling nearly 70,000 euros. With an 80% chance to win, the lots sold quickly, creating a true prize festival!
Lieke van Lexmond, not only an excellent host but also a brilliant singer, performed “That’s What Friends Are For” with Martine Wilbrink. The vibe spread throughout the room. As the alcohol began to flow, Alain Clark took the stage, and the dance floor came alive. Frederik Abas ended the evening on a high note with a lively performance. As part of the organization, I am proud of the success of the evening and what it has set in motion—before, during, and after the Heldendiner. I am proud of Aniek, forever.
